Master Bath ORC- Week 2

DIY· My Home

There was some progress made this week on the master bath reno.

Week 2 Update

Well, it’s been a week since I announced that the master bath is being renovated for the One Room Challenge. There are so many amazing renovations happening, a big thanks to Better Homes and Garden for sponsoring this challenge!

PREP– WEEK 1– WEEK2-WEEK 3– WEEK 4– WEEK 5– WEEK 6

A 3D sketch of the Master Bath shower plan.
The Master Bath reno is well underway. Prep work and demo has started in order to make way for the new shower to be built.

Most of what was done this week involved demo. I emptied out the bedroom and bathroom, moved us into the spare room, and got to work on the master bath reno. The plan is to sell a few of the existing items (cabinets, shower door, etc) to help offset some costs. More about this will be talked about in my post on where I’ve saved money in this renovation.

In order to cut down on labor costs, we got down to business on some of the tear out. Actually, my husband did most of the tear out while I was out with our toddler on the weekend. There was a lot of removal done when I returned. The shower door, toilet cabinet, closet door track, baseboards and trim, the previous closet shelving, and even some of the cedar planks on the closet wall were removed. I did get to help with removing the vanity though. FYI, marble countertops are heavy!

An empty space is left where the bathroom vanity had once been.
The vanity has been removed to make room for building materials to be moved into place.

The next step was to remove all wall hooks, towel rings, wall anchors, etc so all the wall imperfections were laid out.

Then we poly’d off the room. I covered the bed with a dropcloth/heavy sheet, then also put poly on it. The bed was handmade by my husband and I want to protect all 1000lbs of it as much as possible.

Carpet floor film was laid down to protect the off-white carpet from the tradesmen's boots.
A carpet film was laid down on the off-whtie carpet to protect it during the renovation.

I also splurged on floor wrap. Since the bedroom floor is covered in plush, off white carpet, and we’re keeping it, it needs protecting. I know how job sites go, and with the weather about to get snowy, I don’t want wet boots staining the carpet. So it’s worth it to protect the carpet. It’s also covering the carpet in the hallway and stairs outside the bedroom.

Prep Is Paying Off

I didn’t wait until it was reno time to get the supplies ordered. No no no. Materials take time to arrive, and you get charged outrageously for faster shipping. I also snagged some great sales by looking in advance and having time to wait.

We made the 4 hour drive to the closest Ikea to pick up our new wardrobe set up. I did click and collect which was sooo nice! Everything was ready to go when we got there. We perused and I picked up some accessories, as well as items for future projects. There was no trust in the shipping system with this many pieces (54!) due to a previous Ikea shipping disaster. And it’s nice to check out the store. Before driving 4 hours back.

Demolition of the walk-in closet has started.
The closet is being torn down. The cedar planks were installed really well, which means its a pain to take apart now.

The tiles and building materials started arriving during the week. It is currently being stored at the flooring warehouse, but now that the bedroom is cleared out we will be moving supplies in. The only thing that may not be here in time is the vanity. It is due to arrive during the last week. Please pray for me that it gets here in time for the After photos.

Next Up For The Master Bath Reno

So that’s it for this first week! Now the fun really starts as the shower starts getting built. It is Thanksgiving weekend here in Canada so we are pausing to spend time with our families. But come next week the conversion from a walk-in closet to walk-in shower starts.

A few wall elevation sketches of the shower to show you what the vision for this area is. It’s sometimes easier to explain your plan with a quick diagram.

The goals for this week are:

  • Spray paint metal fixtures
  • Seal floor tiles
  • Gut the shower
  • Frame the shower
  • Have plumber and electrician come in to do their thang
  • Get shower boarded up and ready to tile
  • drywall, mud, tape, and patch so it’s ready for paint in week 4

Head on over to the ORC to check on the progress for everyone else this week too. And in case you missed the memo, I have a great weekly newsletter you should subscribe to! You’ll get my latest posts, freebies, and extra decorating advice. Don’t miss out on my free Reno Guide when you sign up!
