A Simple and Inviting Guest Room

I have recently finished decorating the guest room

This room has been fondly nicknamed the Hotel Houk. It’s the little details that pull this room together and make it a holiday getaway for my guests. There are areas where I splurged as well as areas where I saved money. I’m fortunately able to put time into creating decor projects to save money, that’s my investment tradeoff. The focus though was on the overall feel of the room.
Details
Big BIG Bed

The main feature of the guest room is the big Sealy king size bed we have in it. It is the biggest bed in my house, and it adds that extra bit of luxury to the room. It is the splurge item in the room, along with high-quality bedding. It’s great for when a single visitor comes for a stay or for a family.
Cozy And Warm

Since the guest room is located in the basement, I wanted to make sure it’s as warm as possible. That also means making it not feel like a room in the basement. This electric fireplace is multi-purposed as it functions as shelving, ambient lighting, and heat. This would have been a splurge item, except it was relocated from another room. It pays to shop your own house first my friends!
The area rug fills the main walking space with a fun pattern. Area rugs help to anchor a room as well as provide warmth underfoot. The flooring is a luxury vinyl plank, which is great for damp locations but can feel chilly during the winter. The area rug helps to keep the chill away. This rug is from Lorena Canals and it’s machine washable, a nice perk.
Lighting

As with any space, lighting plays a big role in how a room feels. It’s good practice to have multiple sources of light. In the guest room, there’s a primary overhead ceiling lamp, two bedside lamps for secondary lighting, the fireplace for ambient lighting, and the window for natural light.
The primary light is nothing fancy, just a flush ceiling lamp. Since the suspended ceiling lowers the ceiling height, a flush lamp keeps our tall friends from hitting their heads on the light. It’s all about comfort right? The bedside lamps are second hand from a local buy and sell group and work great for this simple guest room.
WALL SPACE
I love art and how it can transform a space. I have a mix of styles and prints

The canvas art above the bed is from Walmart and was the perfect size for the bed. It was cheaper to get this print than to get a large enough canvas to paint my own art. And this one has sparkle which is always a bonus in my eyes. The side walls display a building sketch and wildlife photography by different artists to really mix up the art styles.

To further emphasize the welcome, a trio of

It’s The Little Things
I always keep a basket of fresh towels right in the guest room. This way my guests don’t have to go searching for them. Or feel like they are asking for permission to go wash up. They have free access to these towels at any time of the day or night. These blue towels are just for the guest room so they don’t get mixed into the linen closet and are returned to the guest room basket.

Along the same line is another basket with an assortment of travel-sized toiletries. This includes common toiletries that may have been forgotten in the rush of packing. Living in a small city means my guests can’t just run out to a store after 9 pm to pick up a replacement toothbrush. By covering the basics my guests don’t have to worry about finding an open store at night and can get through until the morning to pick up anything else.

The last piece I added to the room was a suitcase stand. For a while, it has been my dream to add a stand to the guest room and so it became the ultimate “final piece”. I wanted a place for guests to set their bags other than the bed or the floor. After some searching, I found this simple but sturdy suitcase stand on Amazon. At 30″ wide it perfectly fits the space by the fireplace. Most stands are wider to hold full-sized suitcases and would not fit. But it makes a difference in the functionality of the guest room! It is little features like this that add up.

I’m glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for commenting!
You guest room looks so welcoming. I’m stealing your basket of towels ideal.
Thank you! I’m glad you were able to find something useful for your own home!
When can we come and stay?? This room is so cozy and you have obviously thought about your guests’ needs. Your Walmart art find is perfect for the space and it is always a bonus when you get a good deal. The basket you used for the towels looks familiar – another good deal… I think we used the same one (different colour) for toys in our playroom 🙂

Thanks Denise! And you definitely have the same bins! They are a steal and so useful as well as pretty.
What a great space! I love so many of the details you put into this room. I love the idea of towels and toiletries right in the room itself! Never thought of that one. The suitcase stand is so brilliant! Great job on putting this whole room together, you really put your guests first!
Thank you! That was my intentions with this room and I am glad it shows.
