Moodboard Monday: Neutral Living

Neutral Living

There is something relaxing about a neutral living space. Nothing to bombard or overwhelm your senses, every room can flow from one into the other, and your materials can go with any decor style. In fact, the neutral color scheme is often related to two very different design styles: farmhouse and modern minimalist.

Homes that are styled with a neutral color scheme usually feel light and airy. It could be a small apartment overlooking a crowded street with a constant hum from the non-stop traffic and that home would still feel open and refreshing. And this moodboard will help to get you there.

Shades of White

Neutral doesn’t have to feel like a sterile hospital room! That is the fear I hear most when a neutral or white design is being discussed. A quick glance at white home design or neutral living space on pinterest can easily change that perception. Neutral living spaces can feel comfy and cozy too! It’s all in the way you style it. Adding your own personality (and textures!) to your home will instantly change the feeling of a neutral design to make it feel even less like a hospital stay.

This moodboard is far from hospital-vibe and yet it is made of only whites and neutrals. The materials in this mood board lean toward a more rustic style due to the textures used. They have a rougher appearance instead of a polished look. But that rustic look could be turned into farmhouse, cottage, bohemian, nautical, or scandinavian style. Neutral decor is such a people pleaser.

Amongst all the light tones I like to have something to anchor a room and give it defined horizontal spaces. The vinyl plank flooring in this neutral moodboard is the darkest material so that it grounds the space. White shutters are a great way to control lighting in a home and add character to your windows. Or you could use simple white drapes.

In an open concept home you can add design details to add interest instead of changing the color. This also helps to create zones or specific room areas in an open space. This white tile has a slight texture to it for a fun detail without being overly bold. This would be great in kitchens, laundry rooms and bathrooms. The paint color is usually kept consistent for a seamless flow throughout the home. Instead of a white I opted for this light taupe. It is slightly darker than an off-white so that any white decor and details will pop against the taupe backdrop. But it’s still light and neutral to keep the calm vibes flowing.

Materials

Paint Color: Benjamin Moore, Fossil AF-65

Flooring: EzLay Easy Plank, Williams Lake

Tile: Tierra Sol Cambridge Series, White

Window Coverings: Eclipse Shutters, Cotton

Tip: When working with neutrals focus less on perfectly match up tones for every material and fabric. Let whites be a few shades off to create a bit of subtle difference to keep a room from being boring.
