Moodboard Monday: Dark and Dreamy

Moodboard Mondays

Moodboard Monday Inspiration Series

Moodboard Monday: Dark and Dreamy. A lot of homes still have dark laminate and hardwood floors, which were popular a few years ago. It's possible to work with it instead of replacing it! You can even have dark furniture still! By using lighter paint, fabrics, and other furniture stains you accentuate the dark tones of your floor without making the room feel heavy. www.inspireddecorator.com

Dark And Dreamy

Happy Moodboard Monday to you! I know many people have dark floors and furniture in their home and I wanted to show you how to work with them instead of hating them!

A couple of years ago, dark floors were all the rage. They were sleek, modern, and used in virtually every new home build/renovation. Which is how trends and home styles work! Soon after, it was discovered that footprints and dust tend to show up more on the darker floors and they gave way to the lighter floors that we see a lot of now. But that doesn’t mean that the dark floors are ready to be replaced, they are likely in great shape still! They just need to be styled better to work for your home life. Medium-light coloured area rugs and furniture help lighten up the overall darkness of the flooring in a room. Paint colour will also make a big difference.

Sometimes dark furniture is a must-have for a home. Between pets, kids, and exciting football games, furniture can really take a beating, and dark furniture stands up to spills a lot better than creamy fabrics. You can lighten them up with light colored and patterned throw pillows and blankets. Light coloured ottomans and end tables will help balance the visual weight of dark furniture too. In the top left corner, you can see how a neutral patterned fabric (pillow cover) helps to diminish the heaviness of the dark couch (navy polyester).

This warm grey paint colour helps to balance the dark floors while blending the dark walnut stain with modern grey tones. It keeps all the colours cohesive and calming. The drapery fabric is mostly light but has a bold print on it for interest. It also serves the purpose of drawing your eyes up and away from the floors so you aren’t so focused on them.

It’s how you style what’s in a room that creates the mood, you can love your dark floors again!

Materials

Laminate Flooring: Beaulieu Esperanza Royal Ebony

Paint: Benjamin Moore Aura Thunder AF-685

Dark Fabric: Jazz It Up Tuxedo Marine

Tip: If there tends to be a lot of spills on your furniture, opt for pillow covers that you can unzip and throw into the wash whenever it’s needed!
