Girl’s Nursery Room Reveal

The news of our family expanding has been greatly anticipated. We are excited to be expecting a little girl! The goal for the last few weeks has been to complete the bedroom makeover and turn our spare room/guest room into a nursery. And we did it! I’m so glad it is completed! I think this is the first project we have completed within a month. Are you ready for our baby girl’s nursery room reveal?

I’ve shown you the before photos and discussed the plans for the room in the Inspiration post. But I’ll show you the before photos again because it’s quite the transformation.

And here are some sketches I designed to keep my vision on track and visible for my husband to see too. This way we were on the same page as to what the end result would be like. It’s not exact and that’s okay! Sometimes along the way plans need to be altered. It could be a decision out of your control, or a change you make on purpose.

Nursery Room Reveal

This room is so fun and peaceful! Exactly what I was hoping to achieve. It feels great to have the room done and ready with time to spare. It’s a mix of new and previously used items, similar to what we did for my son’s nursery. The nice thing is that we already had a lot of items from when my son was a baby, or knew what would be needed and used, and only had to go through and decide what needed to be replaced.

Paint

The overall paint color is gender-neutral, just in case there needs to be a quick swap around. The same wall color was used in my son’s nursery, and it’s one of my favorites. It’s called Palladian Blue HC-144 by Benjamin Moore. It goes so well with the paint scheme throughout the house, and so many accent colors pair nicely with it.

The decor brings in pops of color and some girly pieces. The curtains are this pretty soft coral pink, that match the colors of the flowers on the wall, and the vase of peonies. But these are really the only items that are truly femine items in the room.

Furniture

As mentioned earlier, the furniture is a mix of old and new pieces. The crib was a grandparent gift and so appreciated. It is made in Canada and can be purchased from Costco. It converts from crib to toddler bed, into a double-sized bed frame. This was a great feature with our son’s crib and love that this one converts too. We had been looking at this crib on Amazon initially too, but couldn’t get it shipped to us.

The rocking chair was a gift when I was expecting my first child and so comfortable. So it was definitely going in the new nursery. This is a similar-looking one since I couldn’t find the exact one 5 years later.

The dressers and side tables are from the bedroom set that my husband and I bought when we got married 10 years ago. We built our own bed frame a few years ago and renovated our bedroom/bathroom suite. Then we no longer needed the dressers, so they are now being inherited by our daughter. My son’s dresser set had belonged to my in-laws, were passed down to my husband, and we refinished them for my son’s nursery. I think it’s amazing to have these heirloom pieces that will be passed down as long as our kids want them.

The long dresser is being used as a changing table too. It worked great with our first baby and this Keekaroo Changing Pad was soooo easy to clean. The top drawer holds extra diapers and extra wipes for easy access. The rest of the drawers hold blankets, swaddles, receiving blankets, and sheets. The wipes sit out beside the changing pad, along with a basket for diaper creams, lotions, and hand sanitizer. On the wall is a cute basket display that happens to match the wood of the dresser. This had been picked up for the first nursery room and was convenient for keeping things like pacifiers, nose drops, and mitts handy.

Organizers

The bookshelf is a stand-in right now. I swiped it from my son’s closet but recently learned that one is being made for our daughter as a gift. My son had one made for him too and it’s so special. Afterward, this bookshelf will be moved downstairs for extra storage.

The baskets on it are from the Dollar Tree, and I love these! They are folding fabric baskets, come in 3 colors and in a variety of sizes. I use the shorter baskets in the dresser drawers. I first got them for my son’s nursery 5 years ago and are still being used today. Love them! Organizing products don’t need to be expensive.

The clear acrylic drawer unit is actually from the Dollar Tree too. The drawers are sold individually but designed to stack together. Unfortunately, they don’t stay together well and would fall off each other when a drawer was opened. But a little bit of hot glue between them helps hold them in place and you can’t tell! It’s nice to see what’s inside each drawer.

Decorations for a Girly Flair

The curtains were the easiest way to add a pop of coral pink to the room. These same curtains are in my son’s room too, but in his favourite colour instead. Blackout blinds are sooo important for a nursery. Your baby’s sleep schedule is non-existent when they are born and they depend on you helping to regulate their sleeping schedule to differentiate between night and day. Having a room be bright while they are awake and playing, but dark when they are sleeping, helps their body and mind associate dark with sleep time. But if they are only room-darkening blinds, it won’t be dark enough.

There were horizontal blinds already on the windows, but light sneaks through the vanes. These drapes weren’t completely blackout but layered over the blinds the room is black. Without the blinds behind I wouldn’t have settled for anything less than full blackout blinds. I made this mistake in my son’s nursery and we had to replace the window coverings- which was worth it for the difference it made in his sleep training.

Addressing an elephant in the room; yes longer curtains would look better in the bedroom. But safety is our first concern. Having shorter curtains keep them out of reach of little hands, while still fully concealing the natural light.

The wall decals for the room were initially going to be 3D paper flowers. I was planning to make them myself. But I found I could not get into the project. I started it by painting white cardstock in the soft coral colors I was wanting to use, but that’s where my motivation ended. It was also pointed out that 3D flowers could get in the way of the baby camera, and we want a clear view of the crib at all times. Objects, including pictures, falling into the crib and onto the baby is also a concern. Good thing I fell in love with this floral wall decal from RoomMates. I used two sets in order to get this full design. They went on so easily and blend in beautifully.

DIY Projects

Being a creative person, there are always DIY and craft ideas in my head. Some of these are incorporated into this nursery. Like I mentioned earlier, I didn’t do the 3D flowers I had intended to make, but I did create this faux galvanized metal vase for these artificial peony flowers. The color is called Rosy Pale Pink. I love peonies, they remind me of my Grandma who passed away last year. I feel her presence around me and in this room. The peonies also tie in with the flowers of the wall decal.

Another diy project is the dreamcatcher. A few years ago I taught myself how to make dreamcatchers and started making and selling custom dreamcatchers. I spent a lot of time learning the history and significance of dreamcatchers so I could create them and honor the traditions of a culture not my own. This is not a traditional dreamcatcher though. A doily was used instead of weaving the center to display a beautiful doily from my husband’s family. Ribbons, feathers, and bits of fabric are tied to the bottom of the dreamcatcher to add color and texture. I usually add feathers to the side but did flowers instead to tie in the coral pink. There is a custom dreamcatcher in each bedroom of the house now.

One of my favourite diy projects in this room is the boho rainbow painting that hangs above the changing table. I knew I wanted a rainbow in the room, as per my son’s request, but didn’t want the traditional rainbow colors. I found a rainbow painting on Etsy that really inspired me ,but was no longer available. Painting is one of my favorite past times. Mixing colors and playing with colors is so much fun. I’m actually surprised the colors turned out so well since I painted it in low lighting and didn’t actually have a clue what the true colors would look like when properly lit. Not recommended when you’re doing a painting yourself, but eh, it worked out!

The ceiling light is still the original light, and might be replaced one day, but not at this time. Instead, my diy rainbow table lamp has been tucked into the corner my the rocker chair where a lot of time will be spent breastfeeding. The owl by the doorway is also a night light so a bit of light can be easily turned on when entering the room without turning on the ceiling light in the middle of the night. The owl is from Young Living and functions as an oil diffuser, night light, and sound machine all in one.

The area rug was my son’s and is machine washable! It’s by Lorena Canal and it’s so durable. Its purpose here is to actually protect the cream wall-to-wall carpet from any spit-ups and diaper explosions that could happen in or near the crib. And it helps break up the look of the continuous carpet.

The last little detail is tucked behind the doorway. This accordion hanger was added for some extra storage. It’s originally designed to hold mugs or hats. Right now it’s holding headbands, and perhaps one day will also hold sweaters, necklaces, and housecoats.

Girls Nursery Room Reveal

This little girl’s nursery was so fun to design and create. It actually became a little more girly than I intended, but nothing that isn’t easy to remove for a more gender-neutral room. The bedroom is now something that will transition well as our baby grows up into a toddler, preschooler, and big girl. Since kids rely and thrive on stability and the comforts of a room that stays the same, I wanted to make sure the bedroom wouldn’t need many changes to stay functional for her as she grows. It can adapt to her while still looking beautiful and being comforting.
