Teal & Sunshine

Doesn’t this moodboard just make you want to smile? It reminds me of crystal blue waters, white sand, and bright sunshine! In other words, paradise! It is uplifting and playful. It’s a dash of happiness in an otherwise neutral scheme. Which is a great concept to use for rental homes or small spaces.

In rentals, the walls are usually a neutral (white, beige or gray) which you can not change. You have to work with it instead of fighting against it. And in small spaces where bold colors can be overwhelming it’s sometimes best to keep things simple and light, then build upon that. Use color in your fabric and decor to liven up a room and leave the fixed surfaces (flooring, walls, ceiling) neutral.

In this moodboard, the grey carpet is slightly darker than the grey walls for a grounding effect. By keeping the backdrop plain and neutral, you get more room to play with colorful decor! Then you can combine colors to find your perfect mix of cheer! Some great ways to bring in color are drapes, pillows, area rugs, picture frames, candles, blankets, and art. Don’t be afraid to use multiple patterns in the same room either. It is okay to mix florals with geometrics, or tribal with polka dots or any other combination. As long as each one makes you happy. Aaand maybe, as a precaution, put a cap on using 3-5 patterns in the same room so you don’t go dizzy.

The teal and sunshine yellow are contrasting in that one is a cool color and the other is a warm color. But otherwise this duo defies color scheme logic. They are not complementary, but instead, they are 2 parts of a square tetrad. I really like the look of them together though so I took the liberty to combine them. Do what makes you happy!

Materials

Carpet: Mohawk, Natural Instinct, Route 66, 936

Fabric: Unique Fine Fabrics, Crossroad, Saint Tropez

Paint: Benjamin Moore, Metropolitan, AF-690

Accent Color: Sunshine Yellow

Tip: For a high energy color scheme, opt for a complimentary scheme using colors that are opposite one another on the color wheel.
